It’s a sunny Sunday morning in Perth and I’m having a slow start to the day after a week away in Melbourne and Sydney…
What a fantastic week… at Platinum and Think Tank in Melbourne then a meeting and catch up with old friends in Sydney. (I love those northern beaches…)
THE UGLY TRUTH
Arrived home yesterday afternoon. Catherine and I went to dinner and movie with our swimming group friends to see the “Ugly Truth”.
Cute romance movie…but highlighted “The Ugly Truth” according to whom?
Each persons truth is of course from their view of the world. The guy in the movie saw the world from his point of view (based on his past experiences) and the girl saw it from her point of view…
Which reminded me of the interview I saw on the plane with Mickey Rourke who also saw the world from his point of view (based on his damaged past). Either way your truth is just your truth… it may in fact not be THE truth… nor a truth that will actually help you live a happy, successful, healthy life..(whatever happiness and success means to you..)
As Socrates once wrote ‘the unexamined life is not worth living..’ so it is that we examine our truth.
Mickey Rourke discovered his truth was a self destructive truth…and he made the change.. and won a Golden Globe and is rebounding back after 10 years in the wilderness.
In business and sales, take care of the truth you convince yourself of…stay out of the wilderness..
The “there’s not enough business out there..” “our prices are’t cheap enough” or “it’s just too tough to get leads these days” may not be a truth you want to buy into…
It’s lonely and dark (and hard to make a buck) in that wilderness..
Don’t confuse your “story” with the “truth”..
ENVIRONMENT, EXCELLENCE, ENERGY
Immersing ourselves in the Think Tank / Platinum environment again this week only again re-enforced the key principle of “if you want to be successful, hang out with successful people”.
“Hang out in an environment where people EXPECT you to be moving toward EXCELLENCE…”
Positive, like minded people on the move. People only too happy to share ideas, strategies, suggestions and hopes and dreams…
As Luciano de Crescenzo once stated, “We are each of us angels with only one wing, and we can only fly by embracing each other.”
DAVID OGILVY AND EXCELLENCE
Also saw a documentary on the plane of the great advertising legend, David Ogilvy.
I’d read “Confesssions of an Advertising Man” years ago.. brilliant book..but to get a further insight into what shaped him was terrific.
He too set an environment of Advertising Excellence in his firm..
I love this quote (just one of his many..)
“Don’t bunt. Aim out of the ball park. Aim for the company of immortals.”
and this one
“If each of us hires people who are smaller than we are, we shall become a company of dwarfs.
But if each of us hires people who are bigger than we are, we shall become a company of giants.”
Here is just one site worth spending a minute on… inspiring..useful Truths from a business legend..
Have a good week..
