Sunday morning and I’m feeling good..
Why? (and why are the people in this photo with Leigh smiling…..?)
Because last night Cath and I had a fantastic night with one of our clients..(and the people in this photo are team members of that client…)
Let me get it right.
The night wasn’t just with one client…
It was with the whole company and their team..and partners..about 40 or 50 people..
Mining People International had their Christmas Party last night.
On March 27th..
(Because December is so busy with other Christmas parties they save their BIG Christmas party for later in the New Year..good idea)
They took the whole of their team, teams partners and suppliers to Gold Class for a private showing of “Alice in Wonderland”… in 3D..
We had drinks and nibbles on arrival… then with all the numbers we had 2 cinemas exclusive to ourselves.. (those big chairs in Gold Class are so comfy).. we put on the 3D glasses… the movie was brilliant…food and drinks were served during the movie.. then we had drinks and desserts in the private area at the end..
Top shelf night.. everyone had a wonderful time..
I can hear some of you saying ‘it must have cost them a fortune!!!’
COST OR INVESTMENT IN DREAMS AND DOING THE IMPOSSIBLE?
Sue and Steve Heather (the owners of the business) see it as just part of what they do at MPI..
They see that team… people… parties…rewards… celebrations..laughing and sharing experiences together is what builds teams… builds companies.. builds a high performance ‘go the extra mile’ culture..
They must have a special line item in their budget called ‘Moet Celebration expenditure’ because Moet is always there part of celebrations.
Why don’t they use a cheaper champagne? Why not St James or something else?
Because they are showing their people they value them..
Why not just have a sausage sizzle in the car park?
Well they do all that too..
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU…..?
When was the last time you had a Gold Class party for your team (and their partners)?
When was the last time you had a sausage sizzle?
When was the last time you celebrated a major project starting or finishing? Or the last time you celebrated when someone reached the 2 year or 5 year mark of being in your company?
THE POWER OF THE IMPOSSIBLE
There’s a great piece of dialogue in Alice in Wonderland …
“Alice laughed: “There’s no use trying,” she said; “one can’t believe impossible things.”
“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”
Alice in Wonderland.
It’s interesting… “Alice..” is a Walt Disney movie.
Walt Disney as a person and as a company have always produced movies with key messages embedded in them..
Themes around ‘following your dreams’ ‘doing the right thing’ ‘adventures’ ‘family’ ‘love’ ‘pride’ run heavily through everything from ‘Mary Poppins’ to ‘Lion King’ and ‘The Little Mermaid’.
Walt was driven by some core values that still drive the company today..
You get an insight into those core value when you read some of his quotes… when you get inside his head, his thinking, his business and life belief system.
I just spent 3 minutes looking at some of Walt’s quotes.. check them out at
Some that jumped out at me… and with a twist… how they apply to both you and me..
‘Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.’
My spin on this..
‘MPI, your company, Blue Rocket… will never be completed…They will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the minds of the people we attract to them..’
We have to attract people with imagination, then create environments for them that allow them to use that imagination…
Too many companies attract people then shut them down with criticism, toxic cultures and poor leadership. Make sure that’s not you.
‘All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.’
My spin on this..
If you can relate to that quote, what was (is) the kick in the teeth telling you?
It’s telling you that what you’re doing needs to change..
It’s telling you your plan or the execution of the plan wasn’t good enough..
It’s telling you the warning signs were there but you didn’t heed them..
It’s telling you your ship has hit the reef. Pull back. Change course. Patch up and stop taking in water. Do something smarter, better, more scientific.
It’s telling you get better information, get better coaching, get someone else in who can help you get where you want to go.
It’s probably telling you to have some humility and get some help or guidance or at least ask yourself ‘if I was coaching me what would I tell myself?’
Anyway.. it’s time for me to go..
Finally a word from Walt..
‘All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.’
PS: The photo at the start of this post is me with one of the Mining People teams who just broke an all time Sales record in the company…and.. they are now already dreaming of the next record..
This is a Walt quote I have been inspired by for years.. maybe you can use it with your people too..
‘If you can dream it, you can do it’ Walt Disney..
It’s a pretty good combination… Walt Disney… Moet… dreams and inspired teamwork..
I challenge you to try it..
