On a Monday morning as the world looms on the Financial Brink I just wanted to help you if I could..
Obama and the team are fighting it out in the White House with the Republicans.
Will they be able to stave off the debt crisis?
Will they default on their debt payments?
Just to put you in the picture in case you didn’t know (Source

The White House and lawmakers have been hunting for an agreement that would raise the $14.3 trillion dollar US debt ceiling while making deep spending cuts aimed at reining in the galloping US budget deficit.
The US economy hit its debt limit on May 16 and has used spending and accounting adjustments, as well as higher-than-expected tax receipts, to continue operating normally — but can only do so through midnight Tuesday.
Business and finance leaders have warned default would send crippling aftershocks through the fragile US economy, still wrestling with stubbornly high unemployment of 9.2 percent in the wake of the 2008 global meltdown.
And if that’s not enough to put you off your Monday morning coffee, poor old Melbourne get the second biggest thrashing of all time.. and the Dockers get washed away in a downpour against Hawthorn..
So what? I hear you ask..
What’s this got to do with business and you?
Here’s the connection… Read on…..
LAST WEEKS LESSONS
In Kalgoorlie last week working with my recruiting client and Sales Manager Shane Moore up there has done an exercise with the team everyone should be doing.
1. To each person in the team: What are your top 3-4 goals for the next 30 days? What should you and the team be achieving?
Once they had written those goals down..
2. Which ones are IN OUR CONTROL and which ones are OUT OF OUR CONTROL?
27 of the 30 goals were WITHIN OUR CONTROL..
It reminded me of Steven Covey’s Circles of Influence and Circles of Concerns model in ‘Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.’
The more we focus on things that are outside our control, the more we disempower ourselves.
The more we focus on the things we can control and influence, the more we empower ourselves, and if fact, increase our ability to influence and control things. We actively grow our Circle of Influence.
As a Manager, Coach, Leader, Self Leader, Business Athlete, it is critical to focus on WHAT YOU CAN INFLUENCE AND CONTROL vs WHAT YOU CANNOT INFLUENCE OR CONTROL.
You and I cannot influence the debt crisis in the USA.
Yet the more time and energy we think about it, talk about it, worry about it, cogitate on it; the more we disempower ourselves and reduce our functioning in the NOW and the things we need to focus on and function to make our lives work in the HERE and NOW..
Sure it’s intellectually and emotionally stimulating to somehow live vicariously as if we are Barack Obama (how many times have you got up from a coffee or wine with a friend and jokingly said ‘well, we’ve solved the world’s problems there haven’t we..?)
But the fact is, that’s his job not yours.
Your job is to do the things you’ve got to do this week.
Note to self:
Let Barack Obama and his mob do their thing, and you do yours..
FUTURE FORTUNE BLIND SPOT
As I was doing some laps in the pool this morning thinking of writing about this blog this morning I recalled something I had written in the Free report on ‘Cracking Open the Fortune Cookies in Your Business’ last week.
I created a model that attempts to explain the difference between knowing and doing.
One of the things it says is, ‘there are things we know we should be doing and are doing. and there are things we know we should be doing but are not doing.. Then there are things we are doing we didn’t even know we should be doing..’
I think Shane knows he should be helping his team set goals, and he’s doing it.. which is why he is such a successful Sales Manager. (More sales records being broken last month with his team)..
REAL ESTATE SALES MANAGERS
We’ll see how many of the Sales Managers are doing what they know they should be doing, and how many are stumbling around in a tough market because they have what we call ‘Future Fortune Blind Spots.’
By the end of the day their Blind Spots will be much smaller that’s for sure..
Anyway, better close off..

IN SUMMARY
How to cope as we tinker on the edge
1. write down your goals
2. work out what you can control
3. focus on what you can control
4. know what you should be doing
5. then do it..
6. Have Faith and Optimism (Optimists live longer, happier lives than pessimists….and get more sex..(OK I made that last bit up..))
7. Get yourself a copy of my latest report and check out the piece on KNOW-DO or DO-NO Matrix and minimising or eliminating your Future Fortune Blind Spot
BONUS POINT
Have faith, at the last hour, a solution will emerge..
As the saying goes ‘often it takes an EMERGE-NCY for the solution to EMERGE..’
That’s why it’s called THE LAST HOUR…
In the last hour, someone shifts, and everything shifts, and a breakthrough occurs..
It will be a good start to your week at least..
POST SCRIPT: I note the deal has now been done… As predicted, at the last hour… read on from the West Australian newspaper site..(Source thewest.com.au )
With barely a day to act, a polarised US House of Representatives has approved a massive austerity plan to avert a debt default that could have wreaked havoc through the global economy.
After intense round-the-clock talks, the Republican-led House voted 269-161 on Monday on a package backed by President Barack Obama to raise the limit on the US debt and authorise at least $US2.1 trillion ($A1.92 trillion) in spending cuts over the next decade.
I’m sure that will be another topic around water coolers, coffee shops and dinner tables.
All of which is interesting, but not part of a Circle of Influence…
Stay focused.
Until next week..
Have a good one.
