LOOKING BACK TO LOOK FORWARD
Spent the last couple of days in good old Bendigo… well, Eaglehawk… The Burra..
Walking down the main street after swimming in my old Eaglehawk Swimming Club pool… memories come flooding back..
The newspaper shop I used to deliver papers from at 6am every morning..
The chemist shop where I used to count out blood pressure tablets and tranquilisers (was that legal??)
The people, the coaches, the heroes, the teachers, the role models who shaped me in those early days..
Looking backwards at where we’ve come from to know what has propelled us to get where we are.. and.. where we want to go before the journey ends..
I feel even more recharged to keep moving forward..

LOOKING BACKWARDS THROUGH THE RIGHT ‘STORY GLASSES’
PS: talking to John on the phone today as I sat in the Mall in Bendigo. Sun was shining. Lovely day.
John was telling me of a client in Perth who has two salespeople who have made NO sales this month yet are full of excuses, blame and justification… and telling their boss why they don’t need any help or coaching…
In the face of all the evidence, their egos are believing their own STORY..
Their story that says things like..
‘it’s the market…’
‘it’s the time of the year..’
‘it’s the product…’
In the meantime John has coached one of their colleagues to make 4 sales in the past 4 weeks…(same market, same products, same time of year…)
Just as its important to look backwards to look forwards, it’s also important to not let your STORY get in the way of your SUCCESS..
You can change your PAST… and you can change your STORY at any point in time… It’s your choice..
Invent.. develop… and live out of an empowering, exciting, enlivening story…. after all… it’s YOUR Story… You choose the one you want to live..
and.. you live the one you CHOOSE..
I see my old mate Brian Cook (CEO of Geelong Footy Club) at the centre of the action this week.
His star player Garry Ablett leaving to go to the Gold Coast. His Coach wanting to stop coaching and retire… and the likelihood that some of his aging players will need to be let go..
Talk about invention and reinvention.
As he said, looking at the positives… ‘This is a great club and it will continue… and we are in a far better position than when I took over 9 years ago… when we were $9 million in debt..’
Cookey is on the ball… a Leader… acknowledge the position you are in.. and acknowledge your achievements.. acknowledge your strengths… and look to a brighter future and the plan to take you there..

He makes the point about the dangers of being a pioneer..
As someone once said… ‘pioneers end up with the arrows in the hat.. or worse…arrows in the back…’
