As I sat there this morning eating my muesli and Sultana Bran…
I flicked through the channels to see what was going on in the world..
Obama and My Muesli
The usual talking heads giving their opinions on Obama and how the Honeymoon
is over, the ‘crisis’ and whether there will or won’t be further interest rate cuts,
who was wearing what in Hollywood last night, and how many drug tests Ben Cousins had
over the past few weeks…
And so it went on… the chatter… the hyperbole..
Journalists all trying to make a name for themselves as to who was the most amusing,
who was the most intelligent, who was the rudest, who was the cutest…
It reminds me of the South Park episode where the kids say that ‘adults are so concerned with the
news.. and the chatter of the day.. rather than just enjoying life… focusing on what was really
For you and I in the game of sales, persuasion, communication, leadership, reaching budgets, realising our potential,
this chatter is really a distraction..
In working with my sales team clients this week, spending more than 10 seconds on this chatter was of
absolutely no use..
Better things to talk about..
It was far more useful to focus on things like..
1. What leads are you working on this week?
2. Where are your leads from next week coming from?
3. What are you doing to position yourself as useful, helpful, favorable, competitive, with your
4. How are you going to run the meetings with these prospects?
5. What deals are you looking to close in the next 7-10 days?
6. What do you need to say or do to close these deals?
7. How are you going to stay motivated, healthy and positive over the next 30 days?
8. What are you reading or listening to that will educate, inspire, motivate you to keep playing
at the top of your game?
These are just some of the questions that are far more practical and useful for most sales professionals and
business leaders in this climate..
Spending more than?one minute on interest rates, deficits and political chatter is like a tight rope walker
looking at how far down they will fall…. WRONG FOCUS…
Focus on where you want to go..
Focus on the steps you need to safely get you there..
Play out in your mind the successful actions you need to take..
Build and reinforce the self image and self talk that will empower and edify you..
Surround yourself with people who will support you and help you get there..
It really is compelling proof that now is not the time to take your eyes off?your sales and marketing…
