I’m reading Wayne Bennett (the legendary Rugby League coach here in Australia’s) book “Man in the Mirror’ at the moment.
Bennett has set records for winning the most number of Premierships – six – and number of years coaching the one club – the Brisbane Broncos for 21 years.
As a Coach myself, I’m interested in his thoughts, strategies to dealing with people, how to optimise and get the best out of them, how to turn things around when the game is not going your way etc..
(By the way, this is a photo of me as a youngster with a wolf, well, my Grandfathers sheep dog named Jet.)
When we did a conference with the great AFL Coach, David Parkin several years ago, he told me that Wayne Bennett was not only a good friend of his, but also his Mentor.
Now when you get someone like David Parkin (four time winning Premiership Coach) saying Wayne Bennett is ‘the Coaches Coach’, you listen (and read his book).
But one story stands out for me from the book and I wanted to share it with you.
In sales and business, what goes on between our ears (and in our hearts and spirits) is THE defining factor..
It is about Managing the Wolf Within….as the Cherokee Chief explains to his Grandson
A Cherokee Legend – The One You Feed
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
Take care of the ONE YOU FEED..
See you next week..
