I’ve just interviewed two sales champions this week for our CD of the month series.
They’ve given me some great Sales Training lessons I wanted to pass onto you asap..
What did I learn?
What did they have in common?
How can you and I benefit from sitting with a high performer and getting inside their heads?
A BRIEF LOOK INSIDE THE HEAD OF A SUPER SALES PERSON
Let me put you in the picture.
One of the Sales Champions started her selling career as a new mother. She was sitting at home with her baby sleeping and she was thinking ‘I need something else to do.. I want more money.. and I have a business idea I want to make happen…’
What does this tell you about the mind of an achiever?
Answer: they want to keep achieving. You can’t keep them down. They are restless.
She also spoke about ‘loving talking to people..’ So being at home with the baby all day didn’t help her achieve that goal. So she got on the phone and started approaching prospects, business targets and potential investors.
Another point she made was ‘Everyone’s Approachable.. no matter who they are..’
This was obviously a guiding principle, a core belief, that no matter who the person was, if they were a prospect, she had no problems calling them…. Then calling them again.. and again..until she got to pitch her idea or product… Persisting..
HOW A SALES COURSE CHANGED MY LIFE
The other Sales Champion told me of a Sales Training Course he had done back in the 1970’s. How that training course changed his life and how he has been a success in sales ever since.
He told me how he ‘was a leader, not a follower..’ That he loved being Number ONE at what he did. That being at the top of the Sales Results Scoreboard was where he belonged.
He told me how he got to work regularly at 4am and often worked 12 hour days..
‘Work ethic Leigh… I’ve got it..’ he told me.
He continued ‘but I love what I do.. I love selling.. I love getting the results…it keeps my mind active and it keeps me young’ he said.
‘The selling starts when the prospect says NO’ was another of his mantras.
He loved bouncing back from objections and giving new insights, new benefits, new reasons why the prospect should say Yes…
‘this is better for you because..
‘and another reason this is for you is because..
‘plus you’ll get…
‘and you’ll get..
‘and if you take out the larger size today I can give it to you at 20% off the normal rate… how does that sound to you?’
‘Always be Closing Leigh,’ he told me while he kept closing me on his message about what made a great salesperson (like him) and an average or poor salesperson (like some of the people he had worked with over the past 40 years..)
EMPOWERING BELIEFS SHAPE YOUR WORLD
Spending just a short amount of time with anyone, you can listen closely and hear the empowering beliefs, disempowering beliefs, guiding principles, self talk and words that shape their destiny.
You’ve just read about two super closers. You’ve just seen some of the empowering beliefs of a super closing salesperson.
Listen to yourself and the people around you for what they say and how that is a definitive insight into the blueprint that shapes their life.
Sometimes you might want to check with them especially when you hear a disempowering belief, a piece of self talk that clearly limits their ability to achieve like
‘I couldn’t do that..’
‘That wouldn’t work for me..’
As Richard Bach (Jonathan Livingston’s Seagull) once wrote
‘argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they’re yours..’
Better to argue for the impossible and achieve something great than argue for limitations and achieve something miniscule.
Make sure you’re having the right argument with yourself.
It will either be an argument for why you do something brilliant, or an argument for why you should do something less than..
It’s really up to you..
Super Closers and Sales Champions have different arguments with themselves than those who are struggling with average or poor results.
Hold the vision and have the ‘why I can do it’ argument.
It reaps a better harvest.
