Sunday morning, the banks say they will lift interest rates even more than the official rates, the biggest story in the land is the Hey Hey Jackson’s skit.. and all is well..
Oh.. and Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize..
Funny old world we live in.. Where we focus attention, what our media priorities are..
Anyway, control the controllables….Lessons from me to you from this week.
ITS OBVIOUS WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT
I’ve been having this back problem for the past year or so..
I thought it was an injury from my wife’s car boot hitting me in the neck..
On the Physio table Bruce (my physio) says the stiffness is in T6 but the hit was up in the neck, the Cervical area..
I ask ‘what can be causing this?’
He says, ‘many things, but how long do you sit at the computer? and what are you using?’
I say ‘ sometimes 5 or 6 hours or more a day.. on the laptop…’
He goes ‘laptop… now that is a problem…’
He continues on to not only tell me of the research results on ergonomic problems of long term laptop use, but especially the use of the mouse and the position the mouse is on your desk and what it does to your shoulders and neck.
In film editing there are people who have had to retire in pain from overuse and poor positioning of their mouse..
He advised me to go to Dick Smith and get a Notebook Stand (which raises the screen height and improves your posture while you type on laptop.. plus a roll out attachment for the desk so the arms are at the right angle (from Ikea – the Summera)
I got straight onto it and it has already made the world of difference…
If you’re in the same boat.. save yourself the money I have spent at the physio.. and get the right gear.
I’ve got to say, Bruce, my physio, has done a brilliant job getting the flexibility back in my back..
Hope this helps those of you who use computers and laptops..
If you haven’t read the book Spin Selling, get hold of it..
It really covers one of our 4 Blue Rocket Selling Zones – the Blue Zone – the Needs Discovery Zone brilliantly..
One key adapation I have made as a result of reading this is the need to clearly articulate when you are presenting your solutions to a prospect is the importance of restating the problem, then the process you will use to solve it, then the payoff to the prospect when they take you up on your recommendation..
You must systematically link your solution to the payoff and their original expressed problem..
Too many people go on about their solution but don’t convert that into benefit and payoff..
As the Spin people say, this is particularly important in B2B and larger sales.
CAN YOU CAPTAIN TWO SHIPS?
I was talking with one of my clients this week and he told me one of his key people was responsible for results in two key areas of the business, yet both areas had sliding numbers.
Can you Captain two ships at once? is my question..
Andrew Carnegie (the richest man in the world in 1901) wrote in his autobiography of the dangers of managers captaining two ships…
I think I’ll take his advice.
Clarity does lead to power….
The magnifying glass focusses the light energy into a laser beam..
Scattered energy has far less effect than focussed energy.
And worse still… lack of success leads to lack of confidence which leads to lack of success..
It becomes a terribly negative spiral..
Go back to the basics… small changes.. baby steps.. small successes..
which then lead to a building in confidence, building in capacity, so we then take larger steps and have larger successes..
