It’s Monday morning as we move into the last few weeks before Christmas…
What a year it’s been..!
How good has it been for your health?
The US Election… Julia and Tony going at it.. Boat people.. Immigration.. New York storms.. The Dockers beating Geelong in the Finals…etc etc..
That’s the coffee table chat stuff… but what about yours and my business stuff..
Yours and my business health.. ?
The stuff of meeting prospects with problems and needs… solving those problems and needs….?
What about the stuff of where we are taking our businesses…. And how we are optimizing our time and our talents..
This year my old mate Peter Symons published his book on ‘Brain Fuel Depletion’ (his personal story and the scientific/chemical underpinnings of the disease that affects millions and millions of people – Depression… Making Sense of Depression – How to prevent and treat it…)
This year my other mate who is an expert in this area Neil Cole wrote his book and award winning plays where he also outlined his personal story with mental health and his journey to deal with it and overcome it.
THE FIRST WEALTH
But the past seven days has brought home to me in a very powerful way that none of us can optimize our talents and gifts if we aren’t here.
Two of my mates in the past 7 days have had heart attacks..been hospitalised and been operated on..
Luckily, both have survived and will make good recoveries.
(Although both will need to modify their lifestyles accordingly…)
(By this stage you’re probably saying ‘Who wants to be a mate of Farnells? With all these mates with health problems….’)
But the fact is, as we move into our 40’s, then 50’s and certainly 60’s, our genetics and our lifestyle will catch up with us..
It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who wrote ‘the first wealth is health..’
NO MORE PIZZA FOR YOU
This resonated in me when one of my friend’s wives said in passing ‘we can’t afford to eat pizza anymore….’
These people are hugely successful in business and financially, but he had just had a heart attack.
But it stopped me in my tracks – I had to think twice.
‘You can’t afford to eat pizza? It’s only $20 or so….’
But of course, she wasn’t using money as the currency to decide if she could afford it..
She was talking health.
HEALTH AS A CURRENCY
Health as a currency..
Think about it..
Without it, any one of us can literally be gone…
No more customers, family, fun, anything (unless you believe in an afterlife that is better than this…. Which may or may not be the case…. But I’d still prefer to be here for quite a while longer given the choice… )
Every decision has consequences..
What I eat… how much I sleep or not…
Who I spend time with..
What I say..
Where I invest money (or not…)
Every decision has consequences..
Will I have another wine?
Will I put more cheese on my cracker?
Will I have sugar with that?
Will I let that negative thought stay in my head one minute longer?
Will I put on that sun screen before I go out in the sun (it’s only for 10 minutes)?
Will I watch that funny movie or that one where heads get cut off?
Will I tell my wife or daughters they look beautiful today?
Will I tell my wife, son and daughters they are strong, empowered, confident and capable people today?
Will I go to bed early and set the alarm so I go swimming tomorrow?
Will I pick up the phone and call 5 customers before 10 o’clock this morning?
All these are choices with consequences…
What can you afford to do or not do..
It’s way more than affording to eat pizza or not…
May you invest in it well…. And may your account overflow with abundance for many years to come.
Have a good week..
See you soon.
