Vale Sales Legend: The Great Bill Fitzpatrick and his Gift to You and Your Sales Results
My wife’s champion father died last Friday.
Sales Legend, the Great Bill ‘The Silver Fox’ Fitzpatrick passed away peacefully in his sleep – aged 76.
A WEEK IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE
The week between the death of a loved one and the funeral is a twilight zone for the close family and friends left behind.
There is the shock, the sadness, the realisation of the hole in your life and the need to move forward and the importance of celebrating what was and the legacy they leave from their time on this planet.
As we go through photo albums preparing for the funeral we both laugh at all the fun memories and cry for the loss.
Tears amongst the smiles.
It is a time of family and close friends coming together.
All sharing this twilight zone together.
Some of you will know I have mentioned Bill in the past.
BILL’S GIFT TO YOU
We did a fantastic ‘Sales Champion CD of the month interview with him a couple of years ago.
Bill was certainly no ordinary sales person.
He sold direct sales for Niagara Therapy for over 35 years.
He was their number one sales person in Australia, New Zealand and Asia for over 21 of those years – straight.
You have to remember his territory was Perth and mainly the South West of Western Australia.
So he travelled to the remote farms around Esperance, Albany, Lake Grace and Kalgoorlie.
He was a Master of Show Stand Selling and selling in people’s loungerooms.
Meeting someone who was just strolling past his show stand or in their lounge room, and two hours later they had bought a $5000 chair or bed from him.
His energy and his passion lit people up.
His colleagues called him ‘The Silver Fox’.
He was awarded a Lifetime Sales Legend Award from the Australian Direct Sales Association.
He was Niagara’s World’s Best Salesperson 3 years in a row – beating his great rivals (as he calls them) “the Yanks”.

I’m sitting here now listening to the interview.

They even developed a trophy and gave it to him at one of their Niagara National Conventions.
Bill mentored and shaped the sales success of many of Niagara’s top sales people.
I met one yesterday.
‘Bill was both a mentor and a father to me…. He taught me from the ground up…’
Vijey has now been with the company for 25 years and is a top Sales Manager and Mentor himself now.
He will come back from a sales run with his team from Albany to be at his Mentors funeral next week.

It’s a strange way to start the New Year but it’s also a reminder of our own mortality.

2013 is full of possibility for all of us.
Bill saw every meeting with a prospect as a real possibility to both help someone get out of pain and the possibility to ‘kick a goal’, make a sale.
TEARS AND LAUGHTER
I am just listening to the 17 minute mark of the interview where he talks about why so many new salespeople failed, how ‘reading the play’ and matching the prospect is a critical skill.
I have tears running down my face.
He is both incredibly funny and incredibly incisive. ‘A rapier not a cutless’ as Bill would say.
I am so glad I persisted and finally got this interview so I can share the magic and the energy of someone who will not pass this way again.
