What I Learnt from a Champion about Success and How you Can Use it in Your Business and Life
THE SECRET TO SUCCESS ON A MONDAY MORNING
I’ve woken up before the alarm this morning with one thought in my mind..
I wanted to share it with you..
I have swimming training in an hour from now..
In the next lane will be a guy who has already been there since 5.30am..
His name is Greg Mickle..
Greg stands at about 5 foot 7 or 8… stocky, fit and now almost 50..
He runs his own very successful building company… family with 2 or 3 kids.. wife.. The complete package..
This is what City of Perth Surf Club web site says about Greg..
Elected Life Member 1989
“…one of the clubs great characters…”
With 46 State Championships to his name, Greg Mickle is the clubs most successful competitor, and one it’s most inspirational leaders.
In between his own competitive success, Greg has coached countless members, bringing many absolute beginners to State Championship level.’
Did you read that right?
46 State Championships….. of which about 8 are State Iron Man Championships..
This guy is a fitness and surf legend in WA…
So what’s this got to do with you and me..?
THE OTHER DAY..
The other day I was walking out of the surf club after one of my light workouts in the gym at the end of the day and I bumped into Greg..
He had been coaching and training with a squad of the young Iron Men and Women..
The fittest of the fit..
He asked me how I was and I said I was feeling pretty fit and he said he had seen me coming down the pool training in the lane next to him.
He said… and here are the key words…
‘That’s the secret Leigh… CONSISTENCY… a consistent routine is the secret.. Just keep doing it…’
ALL CHAMPIONS HAVE A CONSISTENT ROUTINE THAT IS DIFFERENT TO THE AVERAGE PERSON’S ROUTINE..
Having watched Greg since I first met him in the early 80’s, his training routine, his work routine, his family routine, his mental routine, it’s another 10% to 20% or more on what the average person does..
He gets up earlier, he trains with more intensity, he focuses on what he wants and where he wants to go.
He has goals and milestones he works towards – from the Hawaiian Triathlon goal to the Coolangatta Gold goal he has competed in.
He seems to be always training for SOMETHING…
Always has a goal or event in mind… (Maybe that is also a major secret..)
SO WHAT ABOUT YOUR CONSISTENCY AND ROUTINE?
I was with one of my real estate multi millionaire clients last week.
We were jointly running a session with his sales team.
We were talking about his routine when it comes to goal setting, planning, selling and wealth creation.
He talked about REVERSE ENGINEERING YOUR GOAL..
Setting your Sales Goal, Wealth Goal, Home Improvement Goal, Fitness Goal, Relationship Goal, Family Goal…. Then working backwards to map out the plan and make it happen.
I told them of one of the very successful McDonald’s Franchisees in WA who has his Life Goals and Life Timeline mapped out around the walls of his office…
So he can see where he wants to be at any stage over the next 20 or more years..
Both these guys have a Goal Setting Routine they consistently do with their wives and partners – every year, quarter, month and even week… A Goal Setting Routine..
Which then breaks down into a Daily Planning Routine.
What are your consistent routines? What would need to change if you were to take them to a whole new level?
What are your daily planning routines?
What events and goals are you working toward at the moment?
(Planning for holidays is good…. But if they are the only plans you have, you might want to take another look at this list..in no particular order..)
- Wealth goals
- Health Goals
- Relationship goals
- Work goals
- Product development goals
- Sales goals
- Marketing goals
- Happiness goals
- Sporting goals
A TOOL TO HELP WITH YOUR PLANNING – MY GIFT TO YOU ON A MONDAY
Here is one of the simple planning tools I give my clients to start the planning process in terms of time management goals..
P.S: THE AFTERTHOUGHT — THE ROLE OF THE COACH
As I was driving to swim training (to train with my Coach Luke George and the squad) it hit me..
Greg has been coached by Rick Turner for almost 30 years..
Those two are almost inseparable..
A couple of years ago I asked Rick what continues to get you up at 4.45am every day and down the pool to coach these guys?
He said ‘Micko is still doing it. So I’ll keep doing it. I’ve been coaching him since he was a kid.
And (watch here for the understatement) he hasn’t turned out too bad. (46 State Titles, numerous Avon Descent wins, Rottnest solo swims, etc, etc..)
None of the kids I’ve ever coached have turned out too bad so I’ll keep doing it.’
The fact is, Rick has led, coached, set standards, shaped the culture of his elite squad at City of Perth for over 30 years.
Between them, he and Greg Mickle have acted as magnets, attracting and keeping generation after generation of athletes who want to achieve their best in surf life saving competitions.
It really has been the combination – the synergy – that has been the success formula.
THESE ARE THE SUCCESS SECRETS FOR A MONDAY…. TUESDAY.. WEDNESDAY…THURSDAY.. FRIDAY.. SATURDAY AND SUNDAY MORNINGS..
Go for it..
PS: I had a 1000 metre time trial dropped on me by Coach Luke George this morning. I was not keen on the idea at all..
I paced myself… and ended up doing 14.46…. 20 seconds faster than my best time..
Just another example of Coaches bringing the best out in us..
As Henry Ford once said: ‘My best friend is the friend that brings out the best in me…’
Hope this helps..
I’ve got to go training..
Greg will have already been there for an hour when I get there.
Have a great week.
